Over and Over

In response to the word 'repeat' my original photograph captured various repeated shapes, tones and negative space. Having photographed different perspectives of architecture I used manipulation to exaggerate the idea of repetition, by including typography such as "Over and Over" or " Again and Again".

I can't have jalapenos

Over several weeks I took notes of overheard conversations. I was inspired by Eoin Ryan, who is a current illustrator who was influenced by Chinese map printing. His work uses simple cubist shapes to create an image; primarily using animals as his subject matter. Inspired by his work, I responded to one of the quotes and developed a final image. "I can't have jalapenos ever since I go it in my eye" is a very humorous comment made which I developed and experimented with. I wanted to explore various different techniques to create a layered aesthetic; for example using gouache, acetate, photoshop and stencils.

Overheard conversations

Continuing on with the theme of overheard conversations; this work sheet represents my development of ideas and the inspiration I collected for this project.

Dumb Dog

Having an opinion is crucial. Taking that opinion and expressing it through design, was the aim of this project. This idea originated from a newspaper article about a campaign to help children with dsylexia, having identified the frustration and ignorance of different learning styles and the author being mocked as a child as a "Dumb Dog". The letter forms were handmade to create an exaggerated shadow; the text in the book was handmade too. I collaged the text from a history book, to give the impression on how a dsylexic sees when reading outloud. It evokes the hidden secret of confusion felt by a dsylexic.

Exaggerate

Overpopulated countries was my starting point from which I developed this final piece. Places, such as China, need more buildings for people to live. So instead of expanding out; expand up.

Reflection

In a personal project, inspired by Michael Spano and Saul Leiter, I aimed to capture my interpretation of abstraction in an urban environment, by taking photographs of reflections in windows with the complex abstract effect it creates.

Personal Project

In another personal project, inspired by Alexander Rodchenko and Adam Thompson, I captured perspective and contrasts of light and dark to create a very atmospheric image.

Personal project: Journey

Continuing the series of constrasts and capturing negative space; this idea originated from a journey sequence when traveling from suburia to the countryside.

Personal Project

An atmospheric series of images, influenced by Adam Thompson's light series, creating strong contrasts.

"The Bee's Mouth"

I have been attending life drawing classes in a Brighton pub. Apart from being an enjoyable experience, I can freely explore medias and techniques of my choice.

Life drawing

A continuous line drawing exercise carried out at the Brighton pub life drawing class that I attend once a week.

Spectacle

Responding to the word spectacle, in which fairgrounds are temporary eyesores; I aimed to capture motion and use the negative black space to my advantage.

Rejuvenate

This project involved me finding an artifact in an antique store, which I then wanted to rejuvenate using simple media gouache and the photocopying machine. My inspiration for this particular piece was the Wurst Gallery, where there are humorous paintings of characters in original traditional paintings. I experimented with the idea of creating visually ridiculous characters, to explore the idea of drunkeness in advertising.

"Everything you imagine is real"

This is a photographic response to the famous quote by Pablo Picasso that "Everything you imagine is real". Influenced by Gilbert Garcin, who created an abstract series of photographs using models of people and the idea of abstract fine art, I made the sets and used myself as a model in my sets, this series represents a dream-like element which suggests anxiety and goals being out of reach.

Opposites

Working in a group we explored contrasting ideas and explored the development of technology. My outcome was an advertisment of a wacky, eccentric piece of technology constructed by combining various sound systems over the years.

Texture

Responding to the word texture, I combined together two photographs that I had taken. Connecting with the word texture and recreating my own interpretation of the word; this image has a futuristic element in which I decided to use various additional creative processes.

"Flying rats"

My photographic image in response to the word "Inferior".

"Inferior"

The idea of sensoring a pigeon and portraying it as vermin.

The little book of serendipity

Pictionary was the project title, inspired by 'Taxi Driver Wisdom', which was a collaboration of quotes from various taxi drivers; almost a philosophy of life. The book I made was the journey I took to capture my images for this project; a journey of discovery and spontaneity.

Enclose

Typography in urban surrondings and the different forms which are used, was my response to the word "enclose". I was inspired by Ed Ruscha's system of creating painted letter forms, which are only vertical and horizontal lines connected together, but in a variety of styles.
